The Alabama Productivity Center (APC) at The University of Alabama has been working on a program since 2012 that places University student interns at Alabama companies during the summer to work on operational efficiency and sustainability projects. This year’s program is supported by Alabama industry, University partners and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Students participating in the program receive training on operational efficiency and pollution prevention initiatives prior to their assignments. Interns are then placed at participating companies for 12 weeks to work on projects that focus on reduction of carbon emissions; reduced use of energy, water or other resources; protection of natural resources through conservation; and improvements in operational efficiency. The program supports economic, energy and environmental savings for Alabama industry, while enhancing “green” skill sets and hands-on training for students, thus increasing job opportunities for the next generation of employees.
