Lead Based Paint Renovator Instructions & Qualifications

The Lead Based Paint training and certification process requires initial training and accreditation and yearly re-registration. Every three years, the applying individual must take a refresher course from an Alabama-approved trainer to maintain accreditation. The general steps for lead based paint renovator accreditation in Alabama are as follows:

  1. Complete Training
    • Register and pass an Initial training class or most recent refresher class from an Alabama-approved training provider.
  2. Apply
    • Apply online here (crimson button at top left of this page) and submit all required documents
    • Request a copy of .pdf application (English and Spanish applications available) from Program Specialist, Rhonda Hester (rhester@ua.edu) or from approved training provider.
  3. Submit payment. Once application is submitted, the applicant can mail a check/money order, or UA SafeState will contact the applicant for payment.
    • Application Process time – When all required documents and payment is submitted, application review and processing may take up to 30 days. Please plan accordingly.
    • Once processed, the applicant will receive credentials via email and be issued a UA SafeState ID card via mail
  4. Register Firm with Alabama Department of Public Health – Once an individual’s certification is obtained through UA Safe State, the renovator company is required to obtain certification from the ADPH.
    • The ADPH handles in-the-field enforcement of lead regulations inspectors audit records, perform site inspections, and respond to complaints or requests.

  • When in doubt, look at the UA SafeState ID card.
    • Registration Expiration Date is the date an individual must renew their UA SafeState card.
    • Accreditation Expiration Date displays the date an individual must complete lead renovator refresher training.
    • Refresher training must be completed prior to expiration or the Initial Course must be repeated. The most recent training must be conducted by an Alabama-approved training provider.
